摘要:
One of the purposes of science is to understand an inherently complex world and, as such, intangible by any single discipline. The strategy employed by the Cosmostatistics Initiative (COIN) focuses on the social structure of a group of individuals with diverse academic backgrounds. COIN was constructed under the assumption that, in a multidisciplinary context, one must abide by the lemma 'people come first. Under this paradigm, COIN activities are centered around yearly editions of the COIN Residence Program (CRP). Each CRP involves around 12 participants who are not aware of what projects will be developed at the time of application. Once the group is formed, projects are defined from the diversity of interest and expertise available within the group. The CRP lasts for a week, but the group remains in online contact until the completion of the project, which in most cases means the publication of a peer-reviewed scientific paper. Over the past six editions, this initiative has produced 16 peer-reviewed scientific publications in high-impact journals. Many of such works contain methodological innovation in the analysis of astronomical data, and the COIN community has grown to nearly 70 researchers from over 25 countries who have actively contributed to one or more COIN projects. Moreover, the COIN community has self-organized around more long-term and creative projects like participation in large-scale data challenges or the development of classical music pieces inspired by astronomical phenomena. We believe that the COIN strategy is significantly broad and that it can benefit other groups searching for innovative approaches to academic research.
