 Culture and School Leadership in China: Exploring School Leaders’ Views of Relationship- and Rule-based Governance

Abstract: The article presents a study on how Chinese norms and Western traditions affect educational leadership in China. It explores several differences in management and leadership style brought about by gender factors, political and values. It explores the difference between a rule-based control in China wherein the public rules are evident, equal and imposed objectively and the relationship-based ruling in the West is considered the opposite and uses personal associations and private data in dealing with business or personal concerns, promotion and handing out functions. The main reference on Chinese leaders ideas on leadership is also discussed such as Confucian chain authority and guanxi or relationship building, promotions and assigning tasks to subordinates.

本文研究的是我国规范和西方传统如何影响我国的教育领导的问题。主要探讨了由性别因素、政治和价值观所带来的一些管理和领导风格的差异。同时,也探讨了我国基于规则控制和西方基于关系规则的区别,前者其中公共规则是显而易见的、平等的、客观的,而后者则被认为是相反的,并且在处理与企业或个人问题上以及分发功能上使用了个人关系和私人数据。除此之外,本文也讨论了我国领导人关于领导的想法,如儒家的关系链或者是关系建立、晋升和分配给下属的任务。
