Ribbins Peter, Zhang Junhua
Abstract: In recent years, the issues of culture and societal culture have attracted much attention in educational administration and leadership research internationally. This paper considers the role of societal culture in school leadership within China. Based on a theoretical examination of the notion of societal culture and an empirical study of the lives and careers of 40 secondary head teachers from Yunnan, a semi-mountainous Province, in the rural west it discusses five aspects of societal culture influencing head teachers in China: traditional culture (especially contucianism), the Culture Revolution the economic culture, Communist Education, and patriarchal culture. The views of these head teachers are explored and the paper discusses how, as they see it, these aspects of social culture have been influential in shaping their lives and careers as people and their personalities, values and actions as educational leaders.
