A TEACHER'S READING OF ROBERT PIRSIG'SZEN AND THE ART OF MOTORCYCLE MAINTENANCE
James R. Elkins
Abstract:My well-worn copy of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is inscribed: "January, 1975, New Haven, Connecticut."' The book was published in 1974 while I was at Yale, a student again after working as a lawyer in the Civil Division at the Department of Justice and as a federal prosecutor in Newark, New Jersey. I was at Yale to work on an LL.M., pursuing the idea I wanted to be a law teacher. I don't know what possessed me to buy Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: I have never owned a motorcycle and never quite gotten out of my head what I was taught as a young man—motorcycles are dangerous. I had no serious interest in Zen Buddhism or Zen practice when I acquired the book and, I don't think I had any notion that Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance was actually a book about Zen. My reasons for acquiring Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance are now lost in the wash of time.
