Abstract: The article discusses a study which assessed the training needs of newly appointed principal of junior secondary schools in Rivers, Bayelsa, Lagos and Ogun, Nigeria. The study included 235 principals who were assessed during a series of workshops organized by the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA-NIGERIA). It found that principals need training in almost all areas of school administration, and more training in the fields of personnel management, school finance and school-community relationship. Study authors concluded that teaching experience should not be the sole basis for appointing principals.
