What Do Teachers Bring to Leadership?
Donaldson, Gordon A., Jr..
Abstract: Although most schools are formally structured to support a hierarchical model of leadership, the culture within the education profession supports a rich egalitarian ethic. This article discusses the relational model of school leadership, which offers an alternative to the hierarchical model. The relational model views leadership as residing not in individuals, but in the spaces among individuals. The article discusses the unique assets that teacher leaders can bring to the school leadership mix: their ability to forge peer relationships, their commitment to school purposes and goals, and their enthusiasm about improving instruction. It describes three teacher leaders who embody these assets.
