Macromitrium is the third largest moss genus in the world. Because of its high degree of morphological variation, it is one of the most taxonomically difficult genera. Macromitrium is also the only genus of nonvascular plants in “the Red list program” of IUCN, whose species diversity should be studied and assessed. In most parts of the world, the taxonomical revisions of Macromitrium have been completed; while about 84 species names of Macromitrium in South America, parts of Africa are still poorly understood and are in urgent need of taxonomic revision. There are many views and controversies on the classification of Macromitrium. Until now there is not yet a preliminary and widely recognized classification system of the genus Macromitrium because we do not have a completed worldwide taxonomical revision. In our last two projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation, we have checked many type and historical specimens in relation to the genus Macromitrium and have gathered a large amount of original literatures. In the present proposal, we will utilize classical taxonomical methods based on morphology, in combination with the application of statistical analyses to reveal species variation patterns and the character values in the classification of the genus from a comprehensive and worldwide view perspective. With the results of this study, we will establish a phylogenetic tree of Macromitrium and establish a new, rational classification system of the genus.
